Yet, independence exposed a bitter shift: our government failed to lure refugees home, offering little beyond a nation of “hungry liberators” who plundered resources rather than rebuilding for those who fueled the struggle; it turned inward, silencing dissent, jailing critics, and warring against communities, driving more into exile while deterring returnees. When our people face violence abroad—like the recent horrors in Kakuma—Juba deflects blame to host nations and the UNHCR, conveniently forgetting it has no sway over refugees it pushed out. Now, with UNHCR’s U.S. funding slashed, millions in Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, DRC, CAR, and Egypt languish—unfed, uneducated, untreated—facing bullets when they protest, as host governments assert their sovereign right to order. Where do these refugees turn when Juba spurns them for fleeing? And this says nothing of the fresh waves of displacement brewing in Upper Nile, and perhaps soon in Western Equatoria and Western Bahr el Ghazal.”

Professor Jok Madut Jok is a medical anthropologist and scholar who specializes in gender, health, and political violence.
