This decision aims to enhance stability and support the implementation of the fragile peace agreement amidst escalating political and security tensions in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution, proposed by the United States, was adopted with the support of 12 countries, while Russia, China, and Pakistan abstained from voting. The resolution authorizes the mission to use all necessary means to protect civilians, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, monitor human rights violations, and support the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The extension maintains UNMISS&#8217;s current force strength of 17,000 troops and 2,101 police personnel, including justice advisors, with the possibility of adjusting numbers based on ground developments. This decision followed a prior technical extension of nine days to allow for further consultations amid rising political crises, including the detention of First Vice President Riek Machar and internal divisions within the opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicholas Haysom, head of the UN Mission in South Sudan, recently warned that the peace agreement faces a risk of collapse due to the ongoing political crisis and the rise of hate speech and ethnic divisions, noting that the current situation is reminiscent of the 2013 and 2016 conflicts which claimed over 400,000 lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution emphasized the need to accelerate the implementation of the peace agreement, rebuild trust among conflicting parties, and engage in comprehensive dialogue to pave the way for free and fair elections.
