The system, which intensified rapidly overnight into a full-blown blizzard, has brought life to a standstill from the Dakotas to the Great Lakes, stranding thousands of post-holiday travelers and prompting emergency declarations in three states.
“Life-Threatening” Conditions
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Blizzard Warnings for large swathes of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Northern Illinois. Meteorologists warn that the storm is producing snowfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour, accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 50 mph.
“This is a high-impact, dangerous event,” said Dr. Sarah Jenkins, chief meteorologist at the Chicago Climate Center. “We are seeing whiteout conditions across the I-90 and I-94 corridors. Travel is not just difficult; it is impossible. If you are on the road, you are risking your life.”
In Minneapolis, officials reported 14 inches of snow by noon on Tuesday, with another 6 to 8 inches expected before the system pushes east. The heavy accumulation, combined with ice glaze in the southern sectors of the storm near St. Louis and Indianapolis, has created a treacherous mix of hazards.
Aviation Chaos
The storm has wreaked havoc on the nation’s aviation network. Chicago O’Hare International Airport, a critical hub for cross-country travel, has issued a “ground stop,” halting all inbound flights. More than 2,300 flights originating or terminating in the Midwest have been cancelled today, with delays cascading to airports in New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
“We’ve been sleeping on the floor near Gate K12 for six hours,” said Mark Davison, a traveler attempting to return to Boston from a holiday visit in Iowa. “They told us maybe tomorrow, maybe Thursday. It’s a mess.”
Detroit Metropolitan Airport is also facing severe disruptions as the storm’s wintry mix turns to freezing rain, coating runways in ice.
Roads Closed, Power Out
State troopers in Minnesota and Wisconsin have closed major sections of the interstate highway system. A 100-mile stretch of I-94 in western Wisconsin was shut down Tuesday morning following a massive pileup involving semi-trucks and passenger vehicles. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, but emergency crews are struggling to reach stranded motorists due to zero visibility.
Compounding the misery, the heavy, wet snow and high winds have snapped power lines across the region. Utility companies report over 250,000 customers are currently without electricity, with numbers rising hourly. With temperatures forecast to plummet well below zero tonight, officials are scrambling to open warming centers for vulnerable residents.
Tracking East for New Year’s
The misery in the Midwest is only the first act. Forecast models show the low-pressure system tracking swiftly eastward, aimed directly at the Ohio Valley and the Northeast.
“This storm is not done,” Dr. Jenkins warned. “It is reorganizing and heading toward the East Coast. New York, Boston, and Philadelphia need to prepare for a significant impact just in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations.”
For now, the Midwest remains in the grip of the whiteout, digging out from what locals are already calling the “Great Blizzard of ’25.”
© 2025 Juba Global News Network.
