As Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine enters its fifth year in March 2026, a grim and underreported dimension has come into sharp focus: the recruitment of thousands of young Africans\u2014many from Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and dozens of other countries\u2014who have been lured, deceived, or coerced into fighting on the Russian side. Families across the continent are grieving lost sons, brothers, and husbands, while desperately seeking information on the missing, wounded, or dead. Governments are issuing warnings, protests are mounting, and the issue is straining diplomatic ties with Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian authorities, including Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, reported in late February 2026 that at least 1,780 citizens from 36 African countries are currently fighting in the Russian army, with estimates suggesting the true number could be higher\u2014potentially reaching several thousand when including those already killed or withdrawn. Independent investigations, such as a February report by the Swiss-based group INPACT, documented 1,417 Africans from 35 countries recruited between 2023 and September 2025, with at least 316 confirmed dead within months of deployment. Survivors and families describe coercion: threats of deportation, withheld passports, beatings, or outright fraud. Some were told contracts were for \u201csupport roles\u201d or \u201csecurity training\u201d only to find themselves in combat zones like Donbas. Racism from Russian commanders, unpaid wages, poor equipment, and high casualty rates are common complaints. Videos circulating online show African fighters in Russian uniforms, some dancing half-heartedly before battles or pleading for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Focus on Kenya: Protests, Mourning, and Official Response<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya has been hit particularly hard. A February 2026 intelligence report to parliament revealed over 1,000 Kenyans recruited, with 89 on front lines, 39 hospitalized, 28 missing in action, and numerous confirmed dead.
