JUBA, South Sudan<\/strong> \u2014 Nearly eight million people in South Sudan are facing acute hunger, according to a devastating United Nations-backed report released Tuesday, as conflict, displacement, and economic collapse push the world\u2019s youngest nation toward what aid agencies call an \u201cirreversible humanitarian catastrophe.\u201d<\/p>\n The report, published jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and UNICEF, warns that 7.8 million people \u2014 56 percent of South Sudan\u2019s population \u2014 will suffer high levels of food insecurity<\/strong> between April and July 2026. The situation has deteriorated sharply as heavy clashes between government forces and opposition groups intensify across the country.<\/p>\n Perhaps the most alarming figure concerns children: 2.2 million children aged six months to five years are now suffering from acute malnutrition \u2014 an increase of 100,000 in just six months. Ethnic conflict continues to displace communities, climate change has devastated agricultural cycles, and the spillover of violence from neighboring Sudan has added hundreds of thousands of refugees and returnees to an already overstretched system.<\/p>\n South Sudan\u2019s economy is in freefall. Despite holding some of Africa\u2019s largest oil reserves, the country remains one of the poorest in the world. The worsening economic crisis has made food prohibitively expensive for millions.<\/p>\n Fears are mounting that the nation could return to all-out civil war, more than seven years after the 2018 peace agreement ended fighting that killed nearly 400,000 people.
